Collation of Database and Server
I am working a problem according to the collation of MS SQL Server
2000 and a database.
Environment: German MS SQL Server 2000 SP3a
Server Collation: Latin1_General_CI_AS
Collation of the database: SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
(Note: the database was created in an english MSDE and dureing an
upgrade restored on the SQL Server)
During an application upgrade process (refering to the SQL Server
database) I was running into a lot of problems according the datetime
format. So my suggestion was that this problem is related to the
different collations, cause in a different testing environment with
another collation (server collation = database collation) I was able
to perform the upgrade.
So, now I am wondering if its possible to change the database
collation without loosing my data? (hoping that this will solve the
prolem)
Any suggestions or experiences are welcome
tia,
Marcus

Yes , you can change COLLATION in the database
Look at ALTER DATABASE in the BOL

Look, without seeing your code/query its hard to suggest something.

collapse button in SQL reports
I am working with SQL reporting services, I am getting the data dispalyed...
the only problem is that I am not able to collapse, ie (+) button next to the row header and the cloum header.
Can any one let me know, how to get that....
Thnks in adv.
Hi,
i don′t know how familiar you are with Reporting Services, but this is the function accessible through the Hidden property. Select e.g. a group in your table (clicking on the row left next to the table) and choose the property Hidden = True, then specify a toggle item (up the hierarchy of the group could be a textbox in the table) which should display the +/- signs:

COGNOS = CRAP
so i can stop working on the crapIt'll be a while, won't it? In the recent "Ready Set Go" webcast, I asked
if they were going to have more functionality in Reporting Services than
what I get with OWC and the accompanying field list, and they
private-messaged me saying that for now, at least, there would be less.
I know we can do cool stuff with Excel hooked up to cubes, but what my
customers want is a web-based report that shows a few charts together on one
page, and the ability to slice the cube from any of those charts. Right now
Office Web Components won't show just achart (a flattened one can be shown,
without interactivity, via ADO), and I can't show multiple slices of a cube
(unless I'm willing to do clunky frames), and even if I'm willing to show
the table with the chart, the chart formatting issues are untenable.
I agree with you that I would much rather use MS tools for data warehousing,
but on the presentation end, even with the new Reporting Services, there
seems to be room for improvement. That is my impression. I certainly don't
know everything, so if I've got my facts wrong, I hope someone here will
straighten 'em out for me.

Code works without transaction but not with transaction?
VS 2003
.Net Framework V1.1 SP1
SQL Server 2000 SP3
Enterprise Library June 2005
I'm working with some code {not of my creation} that performs the
following sequence of actions:
- Open SqlConnection using SQL authentication with UID & PWD in connect
string
- BeginTransaction
- Call stored procedure that updates 1 table {OK}
- Call stored procedure that updates 1 table {FAIL}
- Call stored procedure that updates 1 table
- Call stored procedure that updates 1 table
- Commit
- Dispose
All calls to the stored procedures are coded like this:
SqlHelper.ExecuteNonQuery(transaction,
CommandType.StoredProcedure,
"StoredProcedure",
param, param ...)
SYMPTOMS:
-If I take away the transaction the code works Ok
-If I use the transaction the code always fails on the second stored
procedure call with a "Login failed for user xxx" exception bubbled up
from ADO.NET's ConnectionPool.GetConnection() method
-If I shuffle the order of procedure calls the second call still always
fails
-If I put a breakpoint before the second procedure call the
transaction's connection is Open and the Isolation level is the default
{ReadCommitted}
As the natives were gathering outside my cube with pitchforks and
torches I hacked out the transaction and put something that works back
online. But, what the heck is happening - any ideas?Crash,
Well, you obviously have an error with the second stored procedure. You
need to track that down.
As for why everything fails, once there is a fail vote in the
transaction, SQL Server will not let you back it out. You have to redo the
whole thing.
Hope this helps.

what order I call them in the second one always fails. If I remove the
transaction all of the procedure calls succeed...
What disturbs me is that I am in the middle of performing steps in an
active transaction on an open connection - and the exception is
bubbling up from the connection pool' Why would it try to fetch a
connection from the pool while I'm in the middle of a transaction'|||I forgot to add:
The transaction is NOT distributed - all stored procedures are
executing in the same database...|||On 1 Feb 2006 14:44:00 -0800, Crash wrote:

Hi Crash,
Since it's always the second procedure that fails, regardless of the
order of execution, I suspect that the stored procedures somehow mess up
the transaction nesting level. Maybe they start a transaction that they
don't end, or maybe they end (commit/rollback) the open transaction that
the next procedure expects to be still open?
What happens if you execute a script like the one below from Query
Analyzer:
BEGIN TRANSACTION
EXEC Proc1 param, param, ...
EXEC Proc2 param, param, ...
EXEC Proc3 param, param, ...
EXEC Proc4 param, param, ...
COMMIT TRANSACTION
Do all procedures execute or do you get errors? If the latter, please
copy and paste the error messages.
It might also help to post the code of the stored procedures themselves.
Hugo Kornelis, SQL Server MVP|||- FYI this code is running under ASP, but it is logging into the
database as a specific user. The user that ASP logs in as is not dbo
but does have rights on all of the tables & procedures involved {I

- None of the tables involved have any triggers on them {I checked}...
- The entire database has no indexes, no constraints, or any other of
those pesky referrential integrity nuisances {not the way I'd do it
either but I got called in to help on this one}...
- Forgot to mention it earlier but had already tried it - yes - within
query analyzer I can succesfully execute any combination of sproc calls
within a transaction just as you recommended... No errors from Query
analyzer within a transaction no matter what order of execution...
- None of the stored procedures does anything with transactions in and
of themselves - they each insert or update 1 row in a single table per
call... The stored procedures do different things but here's a look at
one of them:
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.WT_UserInfo_Update
(
@.UserID int =Null,
@.Password varchar(64) = NULL,
@.FirstName varchar(30) = NULL,
@.LastName varchar(30) = NULL,
@.JobTitle varchar(100) = NULL,
@.PhoneNumber varchar(50) = NULL,
@.EmailAddress varchar(100) = NULL,
@.AdminUserID int = NULL
)
AS
BEGIN
--Update Existing User
Update WT_User
set Password=@.Password,
PasswordChangeDate=getdate(),
FirstName=@.FirstName,
LastName=@.LastName,
JobTitle=@.JobTitle,
PhoneNumber=@.PhoneNumber,
EmailAddress=@.EmailAddress,
ModifiedBy= @.AdminUserID
Where UserID=@.UserID
IF @.@.ERROR <> 0 GOTO ExitProcError
return @.UserID

Return(-1)
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
GRANT EXECUTE ON [dbo].[WT_UserInfo_Update] TO [<<same user as used
in connect string>>]
GO
The other procedures do not do anything fancier; 1 deletes from a
{different} table where @.UserID=xxx, and a third procedure is called x
times to insert 1 row into the other table per call.
I'm thinking this is more of an ADO issue of some sort, but it is
bizarre. Flawlessly reproducable, but very bizarre...|||On 3 Feb 2006 11:50:06 -0800, Crash wrote:

Hi Crash,
Yeah, I have to agree. Since a logically identical series of statements
from Query Analyzer executes flawlessly, it's probably not a SQL Server
issue.
I have no ADO experience, so I can't help you further. Maybe you should
take this to an ADO group. (I think they'll want to see more of the
front--end code than you posted here, though).

Code table maintenance
I am working on the logical model for a database. I need to use a number of
code tables (tables that keep typically name value pairs. I need maintain da
ta like products, services etc).
I am wondering if I increase the abstraction and use one table to represent
the name value pairs but use a category to identify each type is there is an
y value in doing this?
The advantage with this I think is consolidating the data and probably minim
izing the administration
The disadvantages may be too many joins that need to be qualified by the cat
egory type. Also, I may end up having too many self-joins.
Any suggestions'?doesnt seem to make sense to me.
I would keep them seperate.

Any suggestions???Personally I like this approach because then I don't have a bunch of hash tables scattered around the database. Adding new groups of name value pairs becomes a lot easier.
I haven't found the need to perform self-joins, but yes the large number of joins to the same table tends to be a pain. But, you'd still have to have the joins regardless (just to different tables).
Honestly, I am not sure of the performance benefits. But I think the "compactness" of the solution has value.
My 2 cents, maybe only 1 cent.

I added a e.rowsaffected on the pageload for a count and it returns the correct number in the gridview on the page load. Then when i click my edit button it still says the number of rows but the other label still says 0. Ill try what you said, hopefully that works
|||
ok the label now returns the correct count but i have narrowed down the problem to my function that checks for the check boxes.
protected int SetStringArraySize() { Label4.Text = GridView1.Rows.Count.ToString();int count = 0;for (int i = 0; i < GridView1.Rows.Count; i++) { GridViewRow row = GridView1.Rows[i];bool isChecked = ((CheckBox)row.FindControl("UpdateCheckBox1")).Checked;if (isChecked ==true) { count++; } }return count;//returns number of checkboxes that are checked }
This always returns 0. my guess is it is not finding the control "UpdateCheckBox1" so here is the html code to go with it where i specify the check box and it shows up and is functional.

Code does not select any data for information from the different tables in the database
I am trying to get the names of the tables and the column names from the
code below for a database but it is not working. When I run the query
below the column titles are delivered but there is no data. I think this
might be a premissions issue. Has anyone run into this before?
Thanks in advance.
Use Test_db
/* Provides Table Name, Column Name, Extened Description */
Select a.name as tbl_name, b.name as column_name, d.name as data_type,
d.length as length, d.xprec as prec, d.scale as scale, b.usertype,
b.scale, c.value
from sysobjects as a inner join syscolumns as b on a.id=b.id inner join
sysproperties as c on b.colid=c.smallid and a.id=c.id
inner join systypes as d on b.xtype=d.xtypeJeff,
This query will only display rows for columns that have extended properties assigned to them with sp_addextendedproperty. If you need to
see all columns, you can use outer joins instead of inner joins.
For the record, the [sysproperties] table is undocumented and unsupported. Here's an alternative, though a messy one:

I have tried after reading the online books.

CoCreate of DSO for BULKIMPORTSTREAM returned 0x8007045a
Every few hours my SQL Server runs a scheduled job that
performs a BULK INSERT. It was working fine, but today I
received this error
Msg 7302, Level 16, State 1, Server DPGL-VS-SQL-02,
Procedure sp_TACACSlog, Line 70
Could not create an instance of OLE DB
provider 'BULKIMPORTSTREAM'.
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error: CoCreate of DSO
for BULKIMPORTSTREAM returned 0x8007045a].
I have checked KB article 302621, but that is related to
user permission and isn't relevant in this case (no user
permissions have changed).
Please help!
Hi,
Seems some DLLS corruption. Can you try applysing the latest service pack
(sp3a)
and execute the bulk insert again.
Download the SP3a from below site:-

Thanks

Coalesce tables?
I'm working with CRM and I need to selectively add one of 5 tables.
Each of these tables have a field called activityid.
I'd like to join only the one with a specific activity ID. Can I do a left
outer join with coalesce?Since coalesce returns the first nonnull expression among its arguments, in
your case it will return first table name only. But I am not able to figure
out why you want tables?

too many tables. (so many that at some points the report will not run
because too many tables have been linked) Basically there's a central table
that links to 6 other tables, but only successfully links on one of those as
the id from the central table is unique amongst the 6 tables. I was trying
to coalesce this joining so that once it hit the table that has the data it
would stop and not join the rest so that I would not hit my limit of 260
joined tables as I have been.

Coalesce is not working and Update is no updating
My code worked a few weeks ago and has since stop working, reasons are totally not clear to me as to what happended.
However, I need to get this thing up and running. It will not longer Coalesce data entry. Iran the debugger and the correct values are in the specified objects as if it is the first time I run the page for a person it will input data, but not of subsequent data entry attempts.
My code: ( I trully appreciate your help)
Ayo
'Using "With/End With" pass content to columns from text objects and datatime variables (see above)
With cmdCommentUpdate.Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@.UserID", ddlEmployeeSuperCmt.SelectedValue))
.Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@.Today", bDate)).Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@.Comments", dtToday &" " & UCase(userNamedbInsert) &" " & txtComment.Text &" " & vbCrLf))
.Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@.CommenterLogon", UCase(userNamedbInsert))).Parameters.Add(New SqlClient.SqlParameter("@.CommentDate", dtNow))
'Establish the type of commandy object
.CommandType = CommandType.Text
'Pass the Update nonquery statement to the commandText object previously instantiated
.CommandText ="UPDATE ATTTble" & _" SET Comments = COALESCE(Comments, '') + @.Comments, CommenterLogon = @.CommenterLogon, CommentDate = @.CommentDate" & _
" WHERE (UserID = @.UserID) AND (Today = '" & lblDate.Text &"') "
EndWith
Looking at your code if there is an existing comment field for the record the comment field will never get updated. You might want to try,
set Comments =coalesce(@.comments, comments)
This will first see if the value passed in is null, if so it just keeps the existing value otherwise it updates.
Let me know if this helps, or if i am not understanding your question.
|||set Comments =coalesce(@.comments, comments)
The code continues to over write what is in the database instead of appending the comments.

SET Comments = ISNULL(Comments,'') + @.Comments

For some strange reason, unknown to me, the oroginal code started working.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

Coalesce / Comma Delimitted List
(assume @.MyBit, @.MyVarChar, and @.MyValue are all declared)
SELECT distinct
IsNull(Column1, '') AS Column1,
IsNull(Column2,'') + CASE WHEN @.MyBit = 1 THEN ' My Test: ' + (select @.MyVarChar = COALESCE(Column3 + ', ', '') from TableSub where Value = @.MyValue) ELSE '' END AS Column2,
FROM TableMain
I get an ADO error: Incorrect syntax near '='
Thoughts?
Thanks(select @.MyVarChar = COALESCE(Column3 + ', ', '') from TableSub where Value = @.MyValue)
use "[ ]" brackets instead of "( )" around the above select statment.
(and remove the last comma before the FROM stmnt)|||I now have:
SELECT distinct
IsNull(Column1, '') AS Column1,
IsNull(Column2,'') + CASE WHEN @.MyBit = 1 THEN ' My Test: ' + [select @.MyVarChar = COALESCE(Column3 + ', ', '') from TableSub where Value = @.MyValue] ELSE '' END AS Column2
FROM TableMain
and I get:
ADO error: Invalid column name 'select @.MyVarChar = COALESCE(Column3 + ',', '') from TableSub where Value = @.MyValue'
Thanks|||my apologies - here is the correct query
SELECT distinct
IsNull(Column1, '') AS Column1,
IsNull(Column2,'') + CASE WHEN @.MyBit = 1 THEN ' My Test: ' + (select COALESCE(Column3 + ', ', '') from TableSub where Value = @.MyValue) ELSE '' END AS Column2
FROM TableMain
put the "( )" back on and remove the @.MyVarChar = (that is where the err is)
you just need select coalesce...

Please help,
BryanHi Bryan
Is the service you are using a Domain account or a local account? The error
you get says it's executed as user 'IXCOPRSQL01\...' which to me sounds like
a local account rather than a domain account. If you are running it as a
local user, you might have problems getting to your '\\Ixcoprnas01\....'
share.

Oddly enough I didn't figure out what was happening
until I took that line and executed in Query Analyizer
with xp_cmdshell. It wound up it was path to RAR that was
blowing up. It had nothing to to with the NAS or the
backup path. I just stuck RAR in system32 and changed this:
"c:\Program Files\WinRAR\rar" to rar and it was all good.

BryanHi Bryan
Is the service you are using a Domain account or a local account? The error
you get says it's executed as user 'IXCOPRSQL01\...' which to me sounds like
a local account rather than a domain account. If you are running it as a
local user, you might have problems getting to your '\\Ixcoprnas01\....'
share.

Clustering of the Data
I am working on Clustering of the data.I have database of the dictionary including Antonyms and Synonyms.
I have to detect the sense and throw a output for the relevant words [ you can say including the Antonyms].
please tell me how to cluster the data so that it can be more efficient and it can throw more relevant words.
For expamles : if i put the input " Hotel"
it can throw "public house, resort, roadhouse, rooming house, scratch crib, spa, tavern"
like more near to these words....
Please help me to find the good algorithm.
Regards,You must be using Wordnet for extracting the semantic relation among words. If yes, then, Wordnet, would directly give you the sense and related terms.
You may also use the "Cosine Similarity" Algorithm, for clustering.
