collation problem

hi

i have a db with hebrew collation.
i now want it to be cyrillic collation.
converting the db collation - wont help.
i tried exporting data to a blank DB created with cyrillic collation -
still, no good.

what is the best way of having a DB with a certain collation so no
matter the destination DB is, the collation of all columns will be
"database default"

thanks
amosCollations are defined a the column level. Create the tables with the
correct collation and then populate them. You can alter the existing
collation with an ALTER TABLE ... ALTER COLUMN statement but you first have
to drop any indexes on the columns and then re-create them afterwards.

I don't know exactly what you did, but presumably you used some export
wizard which performs too much things behind your back. Since I always
build my databases from scripts under version control, I have no idea
how these export wizard looks like.

If you don't have scripts under version control to build from your best
bet is probably to use the scripting facility in Enterprise Manager. I
don't think you can suppress generation of collation information there.
(You can in QA, but in QA you can only script one table at a time.)
However, once you have the script, you can open it an editor and to
a Replace All on "COLLATE Hebrew_CI_AI" to remove the collation information.

Then you can create the new database. If you need to copy data, you can
use INSERT/SELECT or bulk copy. In the latter case, be sure to export to
Unicode files.

collation issue

Hi
I have a problem with collation orders as follows.
The server collation order is set to Latin1_General_CI_AS.
How ever a few databases, a small number, have the collation order of
SQL_Latin1_General_CI_AS.
Now, when some operations are requested from the interograting App,
involving tempDB temp via sprocs and functions, I get a collation error, no
surprise there.
I have tried DTS, opps not the right tool, and scripts. I have nearly got
there with the scripts, but not quite.
So, to the question. What is the best way to amend the collation order of
the 'rogue' databases. And are there any *foolproof* solns that would do
this without the need for Extensive regression testing?
TIA
ChrisIn your select try something along the lines of
Select ...
From ..
Inner join tab1.Col1 = Tab1.Col2 Collate Database_Default
Can't remember the exact syntax but you can tell your query to use the
coillation of of the current database.

collation error

Hi
I am building a database using the Latin1_General_CI_AS collation.
Everything seems to work fine but I am stuck with this one view. When
creating the view I get this error:

Cannot resolve collation conflict for equal to operation.
View:

Does anyone have any tips?

I have an SQL Server 2000 with Latin1_General_CI_AS

cannot view them correctly in the Query Analyzer , the tool we are using
(powerbuilder) displays them OK.
now that w e want to go Internet we are facing problems with the Greek
fields not displayes correctly...
What can we do in order to have them displayed correctly?
Thanx in advance!
Hi
Do you define the column which displays the database as NAVARCHAR(n)?

Collation

Hi
I have a table with a column as NVARCHAR(500).
The column has some values like this:
ROW1=> ?kergatan? 4?2
ROW2=> TORRE CUSCATLAN 6° NIVEL = > °
ROW3=> EX. EDIF. ANTEL CENTRO DE GOBIERNO 1° PL
ROW4=> MARJORIE DE QUI?ONEZ
I want to avoid the UNICODE character set as seen above. Can anyone please
advice what Collation should I set for that column?
Thanks in advance,
Arun
Why do you want to avoid the UNICODE? What do you want to convert all of
those characters to?

then unicode is the way to go.
The reason is that a collation is normally specific for a country so if you
change it to one collation then you may find your character change.
Can you please tell us why you no longer want a unicode field ?

Clustering two MS SQL 2000 serveres

Hi!
I need to make an active/active cluster out of two servers. One of
them is critical and has huge number of published tables, so I want it
to be available the sooner the better. What is the best way to do
this?
When moving critical servers I practiced this aproach:
1. Stop sql-server service
2. Copy all databases file on a new server
3. Shut down the old one
4. Name the new the same name and install MS SQL Server 2000 on it
5. Stop the sql-sever service and replace the its databases files with
the ones copied from the old server
6. Start the sql-server service
Since one of the sql server nodes will have to be renamed the way
like: node2\second, the above aproach will not work for the second
server. But will it work for the first? Are there any subtleties
concerned with possibly different way a clustered MS SQL Server works?
Thanks.
Hi
You can not rename a cluster, but you could create a DNS alias for your old
server's name to map to the new cluster's name. Until you change your
applications and scripts.

Clustering SQL

Hi

I would like to know if it's possible to make a basic SQL cluster with
windows 2003 server and SQL 2000 standard edtition. It has to be a
basic cluster, I dont need it to be very quick, I can have minutes of
servers down and it's ok.
In case the answer is Yes, can you recommend some links to build it
up, please?

Thanks in advance!!
IgnacioNo. SQL 2000 requires enterprise edition to do a cluster. SQL 2005
will do a cluster on standard edition.|||On Jun 6, 12:02 pm, Mark <stricker...@.gmail.comwrote:

clustering and db mirroring

Hi

I know there was a previous thread on setting up DB Mirroring and Clustering where DB Mirroring would failover first because its faster than clustering. But is there a way to set up servers to allow clustering to failover first and then use DB Mirroring failover if the cluster node fails.

thanks

P

Not with HA operating mode. Any cluster failover will cause a failover of Database Mirroring if you have high Availability operating mode configured. You can accomplish this with High Performance or High Protection operating mode, but then the failover is manual.

clustered index fragmentation

Hi

I am testing some clustered index on a table I was working on. I put a clustered index on an int column with identity and insert some several thousand records into the table. I check the index fragmentation and notice that it was about 20%. I thought since the identity field is incremental, there would be little or no fragmentation. Is this true or is there something wrong with my server

thanks

Paul

A clustered index is a table (heap), indexed.
See:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Index Defragmentation Best Practices
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/ss2kidbp.mspx#EJD|||When was the last time the DBREINDEX job executed? Try to update statistics on the involved tables for a performance gain.|||

When you created the index what fill factor did you use? Did you select the padding option?

|||The fragmentation on your tables are due to updates of the variable length columns and not due to inserts. An int column with identity is the best candidate for clustered index, as there wont be any fragmentation during inserts. However, when you update your tables and increase the data size of columns having variable length, than it is very likely of your table getting fragmented.
One suggestion is to use a fill factor depending on the frequency of updates of your variable length columns. Hope this helps :)
